Last week found us reviewing the new album and this week we’re diving a bit deeper into the life of SYNT and the mind of their vocalist, Fox. This interview is the result of compiled emails between Fox and UTG JP, but stay tuned because there will be even more fun times with the band before the album is released on 10-14-08.

Sometimes we give input to artists and sometimes we just them do their thing. We get Chad Lenjer of Discordant Art to do a lot of our stuff. He is a good dude. He also did the artwork for Intervals. But we go through a number of other artists also like Blairkills and B-Boy Illustration. Plus Travis has his own design company and I do illustration and Drew is pretty handy with Photoshop so collectivly we do designs as well. We just signed an endorsment with Rocket Clothing so we are hoping to collaborate on a shirt with them also.. JP: What exactly is the recording process like for SYNT?

F: Well for me it was sitting on a couch playing Need For Speed until it was time for me to do vocals haha. But seriously we take it in steps. Drums then guitar then bass then vocals. Then we went back and refined what we thought should be refined. We wanted the album to have more of a live sound so we left some minor mistakes here and there alone cause sh*t happens live. Also Drew and Trav are doing backing vocals so we had fun playing with that. Then after we got everything how we wanted we got to experiment a bit. We played around with recording feedback and did this drum circle thing and played around with a mandalin. We were going to have Joe play his tuba but he b**ched out. We also had our friend Nate Johnson come in and throw some guest vocals down. Anyways we mixed for a few days after that and put it in Scott Hull’s hands to play with after that.

JP: Can you tell me anything about the album title or album art? What, if any, is the theme of the album?

F: Well the album is themed around the concept of time and how things change. Hence, “Intervals”. All the song titles have something to do with time in general. No more joke titles with this album. I think we are going to loose fans just based on that haha but I could give a sh*t less. The artwork also has the theme through out it. Chad did a great job! It shows a boy growing into an old man, which we refer to as Old Man Time, and he made the cover.

JP: What can you tell me about SYNT’s new sound?

More mature. Still fast and crazy but a different approach. We like the direction we are heading. We also have acouple jams on there that are kinda like Paraphilla and Pogonotraphy from Parasite. Just kinda slow but heavy. Its definatly a lot different then Parasite.

JP: You guys got rid of a lot of the joke aspects, like the song titles. Can we expect a much more mature SYNT??

F: Haha I think I already pretty much answered that. When I joined the band all the titles for Parasite were set in stone and have nothing to do with the lyrics and that bugged the sh*t out of me. So this time around I asked the guys if I could get a little serious with them and they thought it was a good idea since we wanted to make a themed album. However we have been thinking of funny titles for new songs. “That dude from Metal Injection hates us” I think would be a good one haha.

I came to find that each song utilized several different instruments and vocalists, but the common thread was that they all had a quality that I would not mind having spew from my car stereo. Knowing that Anthony Green (Circa Survive) had his hands on this album, one can expect his shrill, dreamy vocals and guitar rhythms to be in the bag. Green as well as members from RX Bandits, Finch and Chiodos pool their influences on the album, as there are nuances of jazz, pop punk, and I detected a 90′s grunge feel on the track titled “I, The Swan”. Every song on the album is completely different – the band seems to tie in progressive guitar leads with distortion, sampling and an ambient ascetic. Elements of jazz and funk are present in tracks “Blessed Be Your Mister V” and “The Heraldic Break”. SOAF throws in a muted trumpet which surprisingly does not sound out of place at all. There is an unexpected, enjoyable guitar solo in “Lude”.

My favorite tracks on the album are “Another Leather Lung” and “Cellophane” – they stand apart from the other tracks with driven, complex grooves. It sounds like Chiodos and Fall of Troy meets some kind of sensitive ambient rock and roll, in a good way. “Lung”s vocals and guitar rhythms remind me of My Chemical Romance; the pop punk backgrounds of some of the members shine through on the track. The Sound of Animals Fighting is an intriguing band in that it is a handful of successful musicians coming together to play, and it is clear that there were no limits in the musical experimentation. “Ubekistan” and “Chinese New Year” as well as the Intro utilize samples of children laughing and talking, a woman speaking Arabic and distorted nonsense. Although a bit strange, SOAF is one of the more cohesive experimental bands I have heard – these songs could certainly be performed live.

This may not be my favorite album of the year, but I was entertained. If you like any of the bands that the members of Sound of Animals Fighting hail from, give this album a listen, because the talent, passion, and chemistry of all individuals involved really shines through. I recommend that you add The Ocean And The Sun to your Fall playlist, and tap your steering wheel or nod your head to the tunes that just feel right to me this season.

No, on this record, the music just naturally slowed down and sped up between brutal sludge breakdowns and frantic assaults of blastbeats and pick sweeps. There is a good example of this is the second track on the album “In The End”. The song starts out really slow and just speeds up each time the verse riff repeats. It really sets the tone of the whole album. It was evident early on that this was a much more mature See You Next Tuesday then I could have ever imagined seeing.

Her Space Holiday’s XOXO, Panda And The New Kid Revival is the album I’m talking about and let me tell you this: this album will sweep you off your feet. I’ve been sitting on the album for about a week now and if not listening all the way through each time I cross it, I’ve been more than able to fall in love with many individual tracks and get swept up in hitting repeat again and again. This isn’t the kind of album with cutesy songs with indie pop vibes that become annoying all too soon. No, this is an album full of whimsy and heart that leaves you swept up in tales of love, life, and growing up. I didn’t know what to expect going into this disc, but I came out a huge fan and I’m sure you will as well.

“The New Kid Revival,” the opening track which begins with some slowly crescendoing guitar work, will surely be a hit with any indie pop fan. The song has the feel good vibes of The Shins, but with the simplicity of Bright Eyes [If Conor had a more positive outlook on life]. The music feels loose and free to expand and shrink on a moments notice and that’s what really seals it as something you have to really dig into. If you don’t allow yourself to become enthralled with the tones laced throughout the track, you’re likely to miss out on some of the finest songwriting of the year. Everything is simple, but it makes for a great pop song and that’s really what matters in the end. This leads to the children’s toy sounding intro of, “The Truth Hurts, So This Should Be Pointless,” which once again begins on a very subtle note before expanding into a pulsing song. You know those arthouse films about misguided twenty somethings that set out to find themselves? This is the kind of track that would play during the travel montage. IT feels like it’s been around for years, but you know it’s fresh from the studio. The percussion, in my opinion, seal the track due to great cymbal rolls and additional percussion work. “The Heartbreak Moment,” feels like Simon and Garfunkel were funneled into an ex-hardcore guy with the fresh hint of broken heart and a six string. Once again, things are kept simple, but it just grooves into your bloodstream and syncs up to your heartbeat. This may be my favorite track on the whole album. This then leads fittingly into, “The Year In Review.” You become transfixed with this track due to the way the guitars and vocals work together to create a great mood and the lyrics are just so honest and easy to relate to. I mean, this isn’t music for the masses, but it should be. The call outs for you to shout out your joy and raise your voice are ones you want to heed in order to share your excitement for the adventure we find ourselves on only 4 tracks in, but you’ll only be singing to yourself. However, I dare to resist still doing so.

There’s a 60′s pop rock feel to, “No More Good Ideas,” that seems a bit off kilter for this album considering what has just passed, but it works because everything just seems to flow too good to deny. Although, it’s not a track I’d really make to much of a fuss about. I wouldn’t be too surprised if, “The Boys and Girls,” appeared on an upcoming episode of Scrubs as it seems to just sound like the kind of song Zach Braff would use in a transition. IT returns to the traveling sound that we heard a bit earlier on, but with a bit more folk influence than before. The use of a real alarm clock sound near the end really takes the authenticity to an all new level and continues the albums organic feel quite well. Couples are bound to fall in love with the feel good vibe of, “Sleepy Tigers,” and shoegazer pop fans will want to marry, “The World Will Deem Us Dangerous.” I don’t mean to gush throughout the disc, but with 6 tracks to go, this is easily becoming the best feel good album of the year and it seems to all have been done with such ease that it should enrage other musicians. There’s always this fine, unspoken line between simple and genius and Her Space Holiday walks it like a trapeze artist.

Kevin Devine may even be jealous of the beauty of, “My Crooked Crown,” an acoustic lead track that tugs at event he coldest heart strings. I feel this is the kind of song that ends summer and welcomes fall as love begins to change into a real relationship or dissipates. I don’t know what to say, but that it is gorgeous. “Four Tapping Shoes and A Kiss,” however, just fails to hit the mark for me. The simplicity kind of catches up here and the music just doesn’t feel too great. The repetitive beat comes to a head here and though the number of layers of sounds increases, the vibe just can’t get off the ground. Almost as if HSH knew I was thinking about repetitiveness, we get a new sound with, “The Telescope,” which is synth lead and glorious. The song itself is pretty okay lyrically and all, but the new music take that mixes new wave and western styles is just irresistible to your ears.

This then leads us into the final three tracks of the album, which kick off amazingly with, “Two Tin Cans and A Length of String.” This song comes out of nowhere sound wise and the lyrics jump out of the dull intro tones and as the music crashes in, you’re still transfixed on the multiple vocal layers leading the track. I wouldn’t mind if all the music was gone and we just had the vocals, it’s that great. Though, part of the charm of the album is how Her Space Holiday can make something so simple sound gorgeous and deep and that is accomplished ten fold as this song plays out. The layers build, but the basic beat is kept and it still sounds like so much more than it is. “The Day In Review,” is a cutesy, relaxed number, but outstays its welcome by about a minute. Whenever an artist has a song that’s very simple musically, like this one, it’s hard to keep things going for a full track and I think that’s what went wrong here because it seems like it should be great, but it never goes anywhere really. Luckily, the albums ends beautifully with, “One For My Soul [Good Night].” The song plays like a closing song should, in fact, it would fit no place else on the album than at the end as the whole thing seems intent on wrapping up everything we’ve heard. The instrumentation is dead on and you’ll be wanting to sing along before the first verse ends. It’s a triumphant end to a wonderful record.

I’ve never known Her Space Holiday before this record, but now I feel like I’ve been missing out on something very, very important in the music world. We at UTG always strive to share music that is real, pure, and full of heart. XOXO, Panda and The New Kid Revival is a roller coaster of gorgeous tones and wonderful melodies. I’ve not heard anything like it all year and it’s easily the best feel good album in a long time. I know, with a name like this one carries, it’s hard to believe it’s anything too stunning, but trust me, you’ll be saying, “Wow,” long before it ends. Let me put it this way: If you don’t buy the new Her Space Holiday Album, you will be missing out on one of the best records put out all year.

You know how some albums from the 70′s still sound great today based solely on the fact they just have this timeless sound to them that you can’t find today? Well, that thought process is no longer allowed as this album has all the classic rock sound you could ever want with a new age twist that makes it very approachable for all ages. Music For Dorothy is the best album this year in terms of finding a balance between southern rock and blues. Most bands get caught with one of the two sounds and then the songs that actually mix the sounds are very apparent and don’t fit., but not this one. The album stumbles on the songwriting and lyrics quite a bit throughout, but be sure to check out, “Lonely,” “Sunshine,” and my personal favorite, “Twin Oaks.” There’s something on this album that I don’t think you can find anywhere else in the market today, but it’s not quite perfected and that becomes apparent as the disc plays out. The band is currently on tour and if your looking for a new band with a classic feel, this is it, but you may want to use caution before diving in.

JP and I both had the same thought as this album appeared in the office: Isn’t this the band from Eurotrip? The answer, my friends, is yes. You know that catchy song about the guy’s girlfriend cheating on him that is played at the party in the film? That was Lustra. In fact, a 2nd version of said song, “Scotty Doesn’t Know,” is tacked on to the end of the disc and is actually a highlight of the whole record. Lustra’s sound tries desperately to be down and out rock with tales of life that anyone can relate to, but it comes off as a bit cheesy most the time. “It’s A Shame About Boston,” is the best track on the whole album and has this early 90′s alternative rock feel that still tastes fresh on your tongue. You will be singing along with the chorus by the end, however the relaxed swagger that works so far here stumbles elsewhere throughout the disc. The main problem here is that the band sounds lost in a sound that’s lost it’s welcome and cannot top the seemingly joke song that was, “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” In fact, the idea the band even felt the need to put the song out again [the 3rd time between the film's soundtrack and the band's last album], is a sign that they aren’t too sure of their music outside of that track. “Kids In Makeup,” tries to be a lighter Foo Fighters type track, but falls flat with lines we’ve heard a 1000 times by better bands and still, somehow, stands out as one of the better tracks the band has. I think this is a one hit wonder band who just can’t recreate the magic to the extent they did before and this whole album is a sign they either need to move on or throw in the towel.

Wax Fang’s La La Land was one of these discs, but after finding myself 6 songs in and smiling ear to ear, I was glad I didn’t follow my initial thoughts. This band has a sound as timeless as early 70′s Elton John. Now I’m not saying they’re like Sir Elton, but the music just feels like it will never age and that’s saying a lot these days. The whole album plays out like one gigantic piece of art with the whimsy of The Who’s Tommy, but with this new millennium twist on the classic rock sound that makes it feel fresh once again. “Cannibal Summer,” my current favorite, is sure to sweep you off your feet before it even reaches the second verse and multiple other tracks do the same. Why music like this doesn’t blow up right away is far, far beyond me, but it needs someone up high to give it a listen. I’m putting Wax Fang down as one of the best newcomers of 08 and I’ll be more than willing to fight this with any and all that oppose. Find this album and this band and just enjoy real music for the first time in awhile.

Well, it’s simple, we expect more from bands we love than the random ones that come through every week. This was very apparent when Shudder, the new album from Bayside, hit my desk sometime last week. Now, I’m no plain fan of Bayside’s music, no, I consider myself part of the cult that is Bayside and their fans. Every album has only gotten better and to say I expected this to continue is no understatement. Though, I fear my beloved boys from the NYC/Long Island area may have taken a step backwards in the progression they’ve worked so hard to achieve.

As Bayside was beginning to reveal details about Shudder, Anthony Raneri, the frontman of the group, said the band wanted to make a very straightforward rock record. I believe there may have been hints at a punk type theme to some extent, but really he should have jsut said they wanted to simplify because from the get go it’s apparent that they’ve done just that. “Boy,” the kickoff track starts a t full speed with some wonderful piano overlays before the band falls into the slightly relaxed verse sections that they’ve become known for. Raneri sounds clean as ever and the instrumentation is spot on. The record as a whole does sound a bit rougher than the previous, but I think that’s fitting for what’s being done on the album as a whole. The chorus here [which was revealed in the groups mini viral marketing campaign] is possibly the best on the whole record and that, of course, is a double edged sword. To me, this song is everything that’s great about Bayside: songs you can relate to with perfect lyrics and pacing. However, the guitar part is very repetitive and the band seems to not have that large sound they brought last time around. Though, gang vocals and time changes near the end seal it as a instant Bayside classic. Up next, “The Ghost of St. Valentine,” which once again starts at full steam and let’s us get a small taste of the great guitar work the band’s other guitar player, Jack, has become known for. The verse is very laid back like most tracks on the band’s self titled release and the chorus soars. it’s easily one of the album’s top three tracks and has a very god bridge that brings in more lyrics that people will swallow whole and teens will want to scream into pillows when they’re angry at night. This then takes us to the single, “No One Understands.” From the get go, you know this is the single for the album. Much like “Duality,” this one starts less abrasively and remains that way throughout. It’s great for the radio, but I fear some Bayside fans will catch on to how this track doesn’t really fit the flow the album has had so far. Which then leaves us torn, because it’s a solid track, but it feels out of place here. This is the kind of song I think Anthony could write with both eyes closed and I just expect more since they’re now 4 full lengths of original material into their career.

“What and What Not,” is like a b-side from the self titled record. The drums feel very weak, but Raneri rocks the lyrics quite well. However, there’s something about the chorus that grows old a bit to quick for me. There’s a fine line between catchy song writing and annoying and I feel that this song dances across that picket fence. The track overall has a very rough feel to it, but once again, that’s the sound they wanted so it works for me. The fifth song, “A Call To Arms,” almost comes across with a Psychobilly sound and, for lack of better phrasing, is just not a good fit for the band. I’m alright with experimenting with sounds and new ideas that you feel the desire to loose, but this one, like the radio single, just feels to simple overall sound wise. I mean, to make a driving rock record is fine, but don’t lose your technicality altogether in order to achieve this. Luckily, just as you start to think this, Jack comes in with a blazing guitar solo and salvages a song that was in dire need of such a savior. I’m going to count this as the band’s one opportunity to save a song with a great solo. That’s a one trick pony and not one you can just whip out whenever. “I Can’t Go On,” is the next stop on Shudder and features some solid guitar work, but struggles on pacing issues. Raneri maintains a mainly apathetic tone throughout, which fits the music, but struggle to keep us interested. Musically, I think this is a solid step for the group, but it feels like there should be something it’s building to and we never seem to reach that destination.

“You can never really win, not to say you’re born to lose, you were born to take 10th place, out of 20 in the field,” is the opening lines to the made for teen America, “Demons.” This is the Bayside song I’ve been waiting to hear since the second track on this disc. The guitars are driving and the lyrics about hating who you’ve become are something everyone in my generation can probably relate to. As long as people make it this far in the disc, I’m sure they will find something to love about the album because this is the best song on the entire album. I can’t say anymore without saying too much, but find this song and listen to it right away. This leads into the furious guitar intro to the Princess Bride inspired song title, “Have Fun Storming The Castle.” This song continues the sound of the last track and that’s the one that works for this band. Everything is fast like the band seemed to be going for on this album and technicality and intensity lyrically is beautiful. this then leads into an oddity of a song, but the last of this new found breath of life for the album. “Howard,” a song in which Raneri seems to relate himself to billionaire Howard Hughes, is addictive for reasons beyond me. The story of the track seems to be a discussion on how people just want and want then take and take, but still throw you out after you give them everything you have. I’m sure if teens know the name, they may jump right on this bandwagon. It’s a great metaphor for our current world and hopefully it’ll cause some people to look into the life of the legend of Howard Hughes.

“Roshambo,” the 10th track on the album, starts out heavy as can be and moves into a driving, Sum 41 like pace and rhythm. Raneri’s more relaxed voice doesn’t match up well with the speed of the verses and causes the track to stumble, but solid drum work comes in to save the day. The chorus, which is made for the youth of america to raise fists to, is very solid, but the verses just feel very awkward and make the track as a whole a bit difficult to completely stomach. “I Think I’ll Be Okay,” the last rock driven song on the album is old school Bayside and goes down quite smooth. IT’s a pretty straightforward rock song and has very obvious Matt Skiba influence, but it’s so good, Like, I listened to it on repeat 4 times the first time it played good. This track is made even better by the fact that the song before and after it are just nothing in comparison. By following song, I mean the acoustic closer, “Moceanu,” which, just falls flat. Raneri spends the verses spelling, yes, literally spelling out words. “I’m s-i-c-k of my meaningless life where c-h-a-n-c-e-s keep passing me by,” is how the song begins and from there it just gets old, very, very fast. The band tries to change up things with a gang vocals and swaying music, but it’s too late to save this closer.

Bayside is a band that has changed lives. They’ve saved people from jumping off buildings and taught us that more people feel like you do than you can ever imagine. Anthony Raneri is a songwriter for my generation and this album simply does not showcase the band’s talent as much as I had hoped. The group has overcome so much and matured ridiculously over the previous three albums, but Shudder is the weakest album since the band’s Victory debut. It’s hit and miss and just leaves you wishing for more. It’s by no means an awful disc and I’m sure it’ll gain more fans for the band, but I don’t think the cult devotees will be completely satisfied. I would tell you to buy this album on principle alone as Bayside is one of the greatest bands out here, but for you old school fans, don’t get your hopes up too high.

Half HXC’ed style, half PlayRadioPlay! feel-goodness, Sky Eats Airplane returns in 2008 with an actual band, although without Cantrell from the original Brack n’ Duck brainchild. The result, the self titled Sky Eats Airplane, is invigorating, crazy nonsense, and well, synth-tastic, if you don’t mind me saying so.

Expect frequent and unexpected turns in the music. Right off the bat, the intro track opens things up with an erratic industrial sounding opening, which transitions to the “Long Walks on Short Bridges,” which launches into an angry Norma Jean style metal. However, the angry screaming gives way to one of vocalist Jerry Roush’s chorusy singing parts, with the backdrop consisting with the SEA staple of bouncy techno patterns and synth leads. The versatile Roush is a key addition for the album, as he is able to supply a better-than-average metal scream, and an almost dreamy sounding singing voice, which becomes a great hooking point and a constant theme throughout the album.

The balance between the metalcore and electronica is struck quite well. “World Between Us” starts fast and slows down to Roush’s soft pace, then continues to weave between SEA’s two characteristic styles. Sky Eats Airplane still waivers from the formula, like the singing against the metal guitars at the beginning of “Transparent.” Roush’s singing style and method reminds me a lot of Chad Ackerman of Destroy the Runner, for anyone who has heard the fantastic album I, Saints. For only being half metalcore, SEA guitarists Duck and Ordway put together some legit stuff, and actually come off progressive in some songs, like the aforementioned “Transparent.”

With all the weapons Sky Eats Airplane possess, the listener is spoiled with a wealth of goodies. Behold the solo and excellent guitarring at the end of “Numbers.” Check out the hush-hush slow-down near the end of “Photographic Memory,” set against the heavy pounding of the drums. Or maybe you need a slower pace in general, as the soft “In Retrospect” takes it easy lounge-chair style. One of the standouts of the album for sure is “The Artificial,” Roush and the band is especially catchy in this song, it’s my favorite for sure.

Sky Eats Airplane takes on an unpredictable anti-chorus/verse style, which blends a lot of their songs together, making it hard to pull out stand-outs, save perhaps “The Artificial” and “Long Walks on Short Bridges.” Also, gone are the techno-industrial interludes, only to be shoved away as outros for many songs onSky Eats Airplane. It’s all part of the transition to become more musical, and Sky Eats Airplane pulls that off fantastically, with a much more polished effort. It’s metal. It’s electronic and techno. It’s progressive. It’s freakin’ catchy at points. You’re bound to find something to like about this album..

There was some material we wrote with different drummer sin the past year, but not a lot. We did a lot without a drummer. Usually, we’ll jam for a bit and try to piece together songs. We play it over and over for hours and try out different things and then record it via laptop and critique it. Next day, we’ll go back in and start writing vocal ideas and adjusting things. This time around we’re trying to hit the studio that our friend owns and play some live stuff to make the best of the time we have while we’re at home. We’re bored except for when we party, so we figured we’d write some songs.

I see people everywhere with Red Sox hats and when I talk to them, they don’t even follow the team. They just wear the hats. There’s just something about this place apparently. I would say I love bands from the East Coast more than the West. Maybe it’s just because we’re awesome. Each side of the state has it’s own thing musically. It’s a great state, we’re just lucky I guess.

Now it’s over for him for the season and it’s bad for us. That’s some “bad news” that’s been on my mind. We play the Jets this weekend and hopefully we’ve got what it takes to beat them. Now I’m going to deal with this hangover, eat, and start drinking again. As soon as we heard about this disc coming out, we jumped on it in a heartbeat as we’ve never been ones to turn down learn more about some of the most talented people to ever grace the face of the Earth. However, having sat through this less than inspiring piece of work, I wish we would maybe thought twice before diving in as it’s becoming apparent that people know anything associated with the lads from Liverpool will sell, regardless of how good it actually is.

Desperately Seeking Paul McCartney is a comedic documentary that aims to be about one women looking for Paul, but turns into one director trying to make a quick buck. Paul McCartney proposed to Ruth Anson at a press conference in the 1960′s and here we are, 40 years later, and she’s trying to find her long lost Paul. She shares this story with anyone who will listen and gets a film crew to follow her as she attempts to track down the “cute” Beatle. What has its high moments, slowly becomes almost sad as we capture this women, who seems to be in a mid life crisis, screaming her story for anyone to hear. Add a random appearance from porn legend Ron Jeremy and some reality show like confessional shots, and you’ve got a mixed bag of decent ideas gone awry.

It’s not just the story here, but the overall feel of the film. The camera work is very amateur and the features and even subtitles on the disc all fall short of standard films. The subtitles don’t work quite right and make reading everything hard, while the features have “Beatles” type songs as they couldn’t afford the rights to the real ones and that’s really the biggest highlight.

Overall, this film feels like it began with a great concept and fall downward from there. I couldn’t tell if the comedy was from the interactions with people or the director poking fun at Anson. The technical work is sloppy and it al feels undercooked. It’s no all bad though, there is some funny moments and the story is interesting to say the least. Just do me a favor and approach this one with caution.
